The Funnel

The Funnel

Notes

A good metaphor for the challenges we face is the funnel. If our natural ecosystems are declining and consumption is rising then we are in a funnel which will continue to narrow.

A classic example is the use of oil.  The rate of discovery of new oil supplies peaked globally in 1960; oil demand exceeded oil discovery in the 1980’s; and "peak oil" (that is the time when oil demand outstrips production) is expected to be “any minute now” - 2010 being considered a likely scenario. That doesn’t mean that we will run out of oil tomorrow, but it does mean that oil based products will rise in price as supplies dwindle. (For more on peak oil, go to the energy section under “Forces of Change”.
